FRIDAY, Jan. 10, 2020 -- Medicaid expansion is associated with a reduction in total opioid overdose deaths and with increases in methadone-related mortality, according to a study published online Jan. 10 in JAMA Network Open. Nicole Kravitz-Wirtz, Ph.D., M.P.H., from the University of California Davis School of Medicine in Sacramento, and colleagues used cross-sectional data from 3,109 counties within 49 states and the District of Columbia to examine annual county-level mortality for overdoses involving any opioid, natural and semisynthetic opioids, methadone, heroin, and synthetic opioids other than methadone. The researchers observed 383,091 opioid overdose fatalities across U.S. counties during the study period, with a mean of 7.25 deaths per county. The rate of total opioid overdose deaths was 6 percent lower with adoption of Medicaid expansion versus the rate in nonexpansion states (relative rate, 0.94). As of Friday, there were 41 confirmed cases of pneumonia caused by the coronavirus, and seven people were in critical condition, according to the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission, the Associated Press reported. The patient, who died on Thursday, was a 61-year-old man who'd been hospitalized with shortness of breath and severe pneumonia. The study findings were published Jan. 13 in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Brigham and Women's Hospital funded the study. MONDAY, Jan. 13, 2020 -- Medications called SGLT2 inhibitors lower blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes. And new research suggests these drugs may have an added benefit -- lowering the risk of gout. Compared with people taking another class of diabetes drugs (GLP1 receptor agonists), those taking the SGLT2 drugs had 36% reduced odds of developing gout, the painful condition that usually starts in the foot. "SGLT2s are one of the most effective classes of medications for people with type 2 diabetes, and they might also reduce risk of gout," said study lead author Dr. Michael Fralick, a general internist at the University of Toronto.……
